Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson in pensive mood at Thursday’s press conference

The Ireland boss had some tough choices to make – he’ll be hoping his selection pays off with victory in Prague in seven days time..

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has named his 25 man squad for the 2 upcoming matches in the latest International window, starting with the World Cup play-off semi final against the Czech Republic this night week.

Blackrock man Jimmy Dunne, with 2 senior caps to his credit so far, has made the selection, and he’s joined by his QPR team mate Harvey Vale – Vale has switched allegiances from England, where he was a former Under 19 captain.
While Dunboyne man Josh Keeley of Luton Town, is one of 3 goalkeepers named, alongside Caoimhin Kelleher and Mark Travers..

There’s a recall for Sammie Szmodics, while also back are Alan Browne, Robbie Brady and Stoke midfielder Bosun Lawal.
While defender James Abankwah has been rewarded for his form with Watford, by also getting the nod.

Liam Scales is also named, even though he lies suspended for the clash in Prague next week.

And contrary to much speculation, there’s been no recall for veteran striker David McGoldrick
The 38 year old has been banging in the goals in League One for Barnsley recently, leading to talk that he might come out of international retirement – but that’s not the case.

And at his Press conference this lunchtime, manager Heimir Hallgrimsson also confirmed that he has signed a new contract until the end of the UEFA EURO 2028 campaign.
