In case you haven’t heard, the Hannah Montana-issance is nigh. Last month, Miley Cyrus announced she’d be putting her blonde wig back on for the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, which airs next week on Disney+. Well, according to a new Variety interview, we have Cyrus to thank for single-handedly willing it to fruition.
Cyrus first started dropping hints about the reunion over the summer, saying in a July interview with SiriusXM that she wanted to do “something really, really special” for the show’s 20th anniversary. But according to her, Disney hadn’t even agreed to a special when she said that. “I learned this terrible habit — but I actually think it was good advice — from Dolly,” she told Variety, referring, of course, to her godmother, Dolly Parton. “She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say ‘no.’ So I just started promoting a Hannah Montana 20th-anniversary special that literally did not exist.”
Call it lying or call it manifesting — it worked. After rumors started flying about a potential reunion, Cyrus said she sent some of the fan reactions to Disney executives as evidence that it “would be huge.” Disney’s Charlie Andrews told Variety it began planning for the special in December, calling it a “mad dash” to pull it off. “She willed it into existence,” Andrews said. As a wise woman in a sequined vest once told me, “Life’s what you make it.”
