The last time Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence teamed up, they were astronomers trying to avert the apocalypse in Adam McKay’s climate crisis satire Don’t Look Up. Things are noticeably chillier — and the vibe is far more Don’t Look Now — in the newly dropped first look at the duo in Martin Scorsese‘s upcoming Apple-backed adaptation of Peter Cameron’s What Happens At Night, a ghost story centred around a married couple whose journey to Europe to adopt a baby takes some unexpected turns. With production officially underway as of today, you can see Leo and JLaw feel a chill below;

Brrr — we don’t care how hotly anticipated What Happens At Night and the prospect of Marty back in his Shutter Island milieu may be, you can positively feel the cold from this first shot of the legendary auteur’s latest. And honestly, we fully expect the chills will be here to stay the course in the movie itself if the source material’s anything to go by. Adapted for screen by Patrick Marber (Notes On A Scandal), What Happens At Night — as mentioned above — sees DiCaprio and Lawrence star as a couple traveling through Europe looking to adopt a child. The kicker is that when they stop at their hotel, the spouses, caught in a liminal/almost purgatorial space, are met with a cavalcade of oddballs — including, per the novel’s synopsis, “a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer” — who leave them questioning each other and their relationship. Spooky, eh?

Following Leo and JLaw’s recent powerhouse performances in 2026 Oscars Best Picture winner One Battle After Another and Lynne Ramsey’s Die My Love respectively, both of which in starkly contrasting ways put the stresses of parenthood under the microscope, we are very intrigued to see what What Happens At Night has in store. And with the likes of Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris among the ensemble, a cracker of a novel providing the source material, and actual Marty himself at the helm, consider our attention grabbed and curiosity piqued for this one.
