An iconic and unique west Donegal cottage on 34.5 acres has gone on the market with an asking price of €78,000.

The traditional three-bedroom structure, at Dunmore, Falcarragh, has been described as an ideal ‘fixer upper’ eligible for new grants to upgrade the main residence.

According to the selling against, McBride Auctioneers in Derrybeg, the cottage is ready for refurbishment and ‘bringing back to its former glory’.

Accommodation comprises an open plan living room, two bedrooms and a barn. However, there are no bathrooms in this building.

The property was featured in the best selling book, Traditional Cottages of County Donegal (Joseph Gallagher and Greg Stevenson), which was published in 2012.

It describes the multiple roof lines and roofing materials on this extended farmstead as a demonstration of ‘the evolution of the cottage form’.

The separate entrances are said to suggest the different functions served by the various outbuildings and elongation of the original one-roomed cabin over time.

Writing on the Irish Vernacular Architecture Facebook page this week, Mr Stevenson said: “This is one of the best Donegal cottages – so much so that I gave it a big photo in my book ‘Traditional Cottages of County Donegal‘ – and it’s a bargain with that much land. No idea who is selling it but it’s a gem. Please, someone, buy it and stop it becoming a nasty newbuild plot.”
