Supergirl is certainly making an entrance, and James Gunn reveals exactly how.

Gunn is now the Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, which he has been since 2022 after leaving Marvel Studios as a writer and director known for the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (2014-2023). Since then, Gunn has helped bring Superman back to the big screen in 2025, which grossed over $600 million worldwide. Now, the filmmaker is working on two more movies, Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to release on July 9, 2027, and Supergirl, scheduled for June 26, 2026.

Gunn responded to a fan commenting on a Threads post asking, “When does Supergirl take place compared to Superman (2025) and Man of Tomorrow? I know you said you wanted the DCU to be like Star Wars, where stories are told within a timeline but not necessarily in order. So I was just wondering WHEN Supergirl takes place.” The timeline between the three films could help piece things together when the release dates finally roll around. Gunn gave a to-the-point response:

“In between Superman and Man of Tomorrow.”

The films will be lined up in chronological order of release, so the official DCU timeline will be in the order of Superman, Supergirl, and Man of Tomorrow. Supergirl will be based on the Woman of Tomorrow series as a jaded Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) teams up with a mercenary named Rthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley) as they take a trip of vengeance. The movie is said to show a darker side of Supergirl as a character.

Gunn has also worked at DC Studios in a smaller capacity, where he wrote and directed The Suicide Squad (2021) and then created the spin-off series Peacemaker, which has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%. Fans certainly have high hopes for Supergirl, as the character has had a few notable adaptations of Kara Zor-El, but not as many as people would like.

Man of Tomorrow is also a highly anticipated movie and will show Superman (played by David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) reportedly having to work together to handle a new threat, and that they must overcome. It has been confirmed that the villain will be Braniac (played by Lars Eidinger), as he may attempt to shrink the city of Metropolis.

Supergirl will be available to watch in theaters on June 26, 2026.
