Health expert Dr Eric Berg has warned that bleeding gums could indicate a vitamin C deficiency, with the condition potentially leading to scurvy if left untreatedYoung woman looking at her red bleeding gums

Bleeding gums can be caused by several factors, including brushing too hard, but it can have a hidden meaning

Bleeding gums are often put down to vigorous brushing or inadequate dental hygiene. However, a health expert suggests that this symptom could also signal a significant vitamin deficiency.

Dr Eric Berg, who boasts over 2.3 million followers and more than 30 million likes on TikTok, recently highlighted the issue in a viral video. In the clip, he told viewers: “Bleeding gums is classic vitamin C deficiency.” Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a nutrient the body needs to maintain healthy tissues and strengthen the immune system. The NHS states that it also performs a crucial role in cell protection, maintaining skin health, and healing wounds.

This vitamin is essential for collagen production, a protein that fortifies gums, skin, and blood vessels. Research cited by the National Institutes of Health shows that inadequate vitamin C can prevent proper collagen formation, leading to weakened gums susceptible to bleeding.

A serious shortage of vitamin C can lead to scurvy, a condition historically prevalent among sailors undertaking extended voyages. According to the NHS, early signs include bleeding gums, fatigue, joint pain, and slow wound healing.

Vitamin C is naturally present in numerous fruits and vegetables. The British Dietetic Association identifies some of the best sources as oranges, strawberries, peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes. As the body can’t store significant amounts of vitamin C, it’s crucial to consume it regularly through our diet. The National Institutes of Health suggest that the recommended daily intake for adults is roughly 75 to 90 milligrams, reports the Express.

A deficiency in vitamin C can result in a weakening of the body’s connective tissues. The Cleveland Clinic suggests that this could manifest in symptoms such as bleeding gums, easy bruising and rough or dry skin.

However, bleeding gums aren’t always a sign of a vitamin deficiency. The Mayo Clinic states that gum disease, infections, certain medications and aggressive brushing can also lead to bleeding.

Dental professionals caution that persistent bleeding gums should not be ignored. Health experts recommend seeking advice from a dentist or GP if symptoms continue, as simple dietary changes or treatment may help tackle the root cause.

“My whole life is a deficiency,” joked one user in the TikTok comments section, with another agreeing: “I’m deficient in everything.”

Responses continued with a third remarking: “Thank you for sharing this” and another adding: “I am the deficiency”.

One fan responded: “Thanks for sharing this great information,” followed by another comment from a user asserting: “Our food is not as nutritious as it used to be unfortunately”.

Finally, a viewer cautioned: “Vitamin deficiency can wreck your health, I never gave it too much attention especially as you get older.”
