Waterford City and County Council is to carry out a technical examination of all balconies at an apartment block after two young children fell from a second-storey balcony.

The brother and sister were injured in the incident, which occurred in Block C of Mount Suir Manor in Waterford city yesterday.

A three-year-old boy fell more than 6m after the glass pane at the side of the balcony fell off.

It appears his seven-year-old sister tried to prevent him falling, but she too fell out and down onto the grass below.

The children were in the apartment with other family members at the time.

The glass panel also landed on the grass, leaving an indentation in the ground with another corner sticking up. The boy landed only a few centimetres away.

Both children were taken to University Hospital Waterford. The girl was discharged yesterday afternoon but her brother was kept in for monitoring due to the nature of his head injuries.

The apartment block has been under the remit of Waterford City and County Council since 2019.

Residents in the apartment complex have been highlighting issues with their balconies and properties for a number of years.

A spokesperson for the local authority said that council personnel and a structural engineer have inspected the site in Mount Suir.

The spokesperson said: “Waterford City and County Council will carry out a technical inspection of all Block C balconies commencing Monday, March 23rd and all tenants have been informed accordingly.”
