The spring sunshine looks like it will be short-lived as a significant shift in conditions is on the way

Snow may be just days away

Enjoy the weekend of spring sunshine while it lasts because a significant weather change is on the way, according to Met Eireann.

After a period of settled conditions, which brought plenty of sun and welcome respite from the rain and wind, the national forecaster has warned of the possibility of snow and thunder in just a matter of days.

While highs of 16C will be enjoyed on Saturday, March 21, temperatures are set to plummet to freezing overnight with some mist and fog forming before morning. Southern areas face the greatest risk of frost forming overnight.

Tomorrow, Sunday, March 22, will start cloudy with just a little rain and drizzle moving southeastwards but this will give way to dry weather and some sunny spells extending from the northwest into the afternoon in highs of between 9C and 14C.

Sunday night will see temperatures drop to lows of 1C but Monday will be a largely dry day other than the odd spot of drizzle, with some hazy spells of sunshine in highs of between 9C and 13C.

Tuesday could see a major change in conditions, according to Met Eireann, as unsettled conditions return and coincide with cooler temperatures. There will be widespread showers on Tuesday, some of hail, with the possibility of thunder too.

Into Tuesday evening, it will continue to be windy and showery with the chance of snow and thunder in lows of 1C in some areas.

Unsettled conditions will persist into Wednesday, which will be a windy and showery day with some of the rainfall turning heavy and also the chance of thunder. It will feel colder with significant wind chill as gusts reach gale force in western coastal areas.
