Last year, Marvel Studios announced Jon Bernthal would reprise his role as Frank Castle/the Punisher for a Disney+ special, and a major new detail about it has just been revealed.
Written by Bernthal and Reinaldo Marcus Green, the special will also be directed by Green. In addition to the titular star, its cast includes Jason R. Moore, Roe Rancell, and Mila Jaymes. According to a Writer’s Guild of America directory, the runtime for the Punisher special will be 60 minutes.
This sets the record for the longest Marvel Studios Special Presentation so far. Both released in 2022, Werewolf By Night is 53 minutes long, while The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special runs for 42 minutes. As of March 2026, these are the only three announced Marvel Studios Special Presentations.
What Will The Punisher Special Presentation Be About?
Details on the Punisher special’s plot, including its official title, are currently sparse. However, Bernthal has assured fans that the special “will not be Punisher-lite.” He added that “Frank has no interest in breaking out [of] the darkness.”
“I care very deeply about Frank, I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve,” Bernthal explained. “We’re giving it our all, and we’re trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we’re going to turn our back on the audience — it’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be light.”
Though the current release timeline for the special has not been announced, the actor has teased its connection to his upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing in July 2026. His statements indicated that the special would most likely arrive this summer.
“Around that same time, there will also be this Punisher special that’s coming out, that I think will be as high-octane Punisher as you’ve ever seen,” Bernthal stated. “I think what was really important to me and to Destin [Daniel Cretton] and to Tom [Holland] is that we believed that The Punisher could walk off of the Spider-Man set and could walk onto the special set, and I do believe that we achieved that.”
The Punisher will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releasing on July 31, 2026, while the release date for the Marvel Special Presentation has not yet been announced.
