Erin Doherty has had quite the year: The British actress raked in a Primetime Emmy, a Critics Choice Award and, most recently, a Golden Globes win for her devastating work in the Netflix miniseries “Adolescence.”

That acclaimed role, along with fellow recent high-profile performances including as Princess Anne in Netflix’s “The Crown” and as Mary Carrin in Hulu’s “A Thousand Blows,” has meant that the spotlight is shining on Doherty brighter than ever these days — which makes it the perfect time to discover one of the star’s more overlooked roles.

Becky Green’s (Erin Doherty) days aren’t all that exciting or glamorous — the twentysomething Bristolian spends her time working dull office jobs and looking after her dementia-ridden mother. So it’s understandable that she gets caught up in the glittering social-media presence of her estranged childhood friend Chloe Fairbourne (Poppy Gilbert).

However, when Chloe mysteriously turns up dead, Becky takes the opportunity to step into that charmed life herself, adopting an alter ego (Sasha) and buddying up to Chloe’s chic group of close-knit friends — played by Pippa Bennett-Warner, Billy Howle and Akshay Khanna, among others — to find out exactly what happened to her old pal.

Over six episodes, Doherty’s character gets pulled deeper and deeper into the dark secrets that Chloe was hiding beneath that shiny facade. Will Becky, too, lose herself along the way?

Instagram influencer she’s obsessed with. But while both titles trade in similar themes of obsession, curation, loneliness and identity, “Chloe” takes a much darker approach to the subject matter.

That allows the ever-capable Erin Doherty to dig deep into the intensity of Becky’s desperation and despondency, all set against the backdrop of a satisfyingly slow-burn thriller. “It is a fierce, fresh sort-of-murder-mystery that is as keenly scripted as it is paced, and whose many threads are held firmly together by an outstanding performance from Erin Doherty,” wrote Lucy Mangan of The Guardian, just one of many praise-filled write-ups. Speaking of, the British drama — which was created, written and directed by “Sex Education” alum Alice Seabright — holds an excellent 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
