Last Tango in Halifax star Anne Reid has joined Slow Horses star Freddie Fox and Succession actor Harriet Walter in Sharon Horgan’s upcoming comedy drama. Titled Youth, the new HBO comedy series sees Horgan take on writing and executive producing duties.

Per a Deadline report, the new show will star Horgan and follow a 50-year-old divorcee on the quest for sex and love.

The as-yet-unnamed character must juggle caring for her ailing parents while also parenting her should-be grown-up son.

Joining Horgan as executive producers are Faye Dorn for Merman, Jim Kleverweis, and Dawn Shadforth, who also serves as director.

Reid is best known for playing Valerie Barlow in Coronation Street from 1961 to 1971, and later Celia Dawson in Last Tango in Halifax between 2012 and 2020

Fox is known for his role in the 2020 series White House Farm, where he portrayed mass murderer Jeremy Bamber. He also appeared as James “Spider” Webb in the Apple TV spy thriller Slow Horses, featuring in seasons 1–3 before his character was killed off.

Inspired by Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, the acclaimed spy drama, which has been renewed for a seventh season, centres on a group of misfit MI5 agents led by Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb.

Previously speaking about killing off major characters, Herron said: “Apologies to the cast. That was something that I thought was going to be necessary if I were to write a series of thrillers about people doing what is essentially a dangerous job, even though they’re supposed to be sidelined.”

He continued: “If I hadn’t killed any characters off, then it would have become more a sitcom, really. And also I wanted to write, particularly with the very first death of a major character, I wanted to write about grief.

“I wanted to write about the effect on the other characters of taking one of those characters away, and the responses they would have, ranging from being really heartbroken to Roddy (Christopher Chung) who didn’t give a toss.”
