Shoppers bought 36pc less steak in recent months as rising prices prompted them to buy less beef. The volume of mince purchased dropped by over 10pc.

It comes as recent figures from Numerator show that in the 12 weeks leading up to February 22, the volume of beef purchased by shoppers at Irish retail declined by a dramatic 24pc compared with the same period a year earlier. This coincided with an average price increase of 26pc.
