Health Canada has issued a warning to consumers who may have unknowingly used fake health products obtained from a Mississauga spa.

The federal government agency seized the product from Thumbs Up 4 Shiatsu on Semenyk Court, saying the items were sold or administered to treat pain, hair loss, and manage weight.

The seized products include injectables that are falsely labelled to contain prescription or other drug ingredients

Health Canada says none of the seized items have been authorized, meaning they have not been assessed for safety, efficacy and quality.

“Do not use these products,” Health Canada says. “Consult a licensed healthcare professional if you have been administered or have used these products and have health concerns.”

Selling unauthorized or counterfeit health products is illegal.

“Counterfeit drugs are made to look like authentic products, but they are not the same and they may not contain the drug at all. Though some of the counterfeit products are labelled with DINs (Drug Identification Numbers), which may lead consumers to believe the products were authorized,” reads a statement released by Health Canada.

In some of the items seized, the legitimate manufacturer has already confirmed that the products are counterfeit.

Unauthorized or counterfeit health products may:

Interact with other medications an individual might be taking.
Contain too much, too little, or none of the active ingredient.
Contain high-risk ingredients, additives, or contaminants that may or may not be listed on the label.
Have not been manufactured or stored safely.

As well, unauthorized or counterfeit injectable drugs carry additional risks, including infections, scarring, allergic reactions, and other serious adverse outcomes due to contamination, improper handling, or unsafe administration.
