ITV Racing is back Saturday with a Flat racing bonanza from Doncaster and Kempton, starting here with the Brocklesby Stakes for juveniles over 5f. If you spend £110,000 on a youngster who ends up in the Brocklesby you would really hope it wins and there is every chance BLIXEN FORCE will do just that.
Of course this is a guessing game for most, but Rowan Scott’s mount is by Persian Force, who won this race for the same owners, and while the ground will be on the easy side it shouldn’t be that testing. If it had been very soft I’d have been worried for a horse whose dam was by Showcasing. Trained by Robson de Aguiar. Let’s hope he’s fit!
13:50 Doncaster – Annaf (each-way)
Now the Listed Cammidge Trophy over 6f. The value here might be ANNAF who stays strong and love a bit of cut in the ground. He looks over priced each-way for Mick Appleby and Harry Davies. My selection won at Ascot in soft at the end of October and should be ready enough here after a run in Riyadh in February. Rather oddly he’s only been to Doncaster once before and that was when winning the Portland in 2023.
14:08 Kempton – Spirit Mixer (each-way)
The Queen’s Prize Handicap over 2m. It’s sad the demise of this once great handicap. It’s not going to be easy for 8-year-old SPIRIT MIXER off 96 because he ended last season in great form. However, he stays well and Rob Hornby was on top when the pair took the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. He was only rated 89 then so clearly needs a career best. Still has an each-way chance.
The Spring Mile Handicap over 1m. LIR SPECIALE comes into this with three wins from three runs at Doncaster but he will need a career best to score off 82. He won here on his final two starts last season over 7f off marks of 72 and 77 so on better ground and up a furlong he will need a career best. But he will have no problem with the extra furlong and I would have thought Brian Ellison will have him ready to fire. Conor Whiteley knows the horse well and takes off 7lb. Any more rain very welcome.
14:42 Kempton – Real Dream (Each-Way)
The Roseberry Handicap over 1m3f. I’m going to chance REAL DREAM each-way for David Egan and Ian Williams. My hope is right at the hilt of his handicap mark and often runs over further. However, a strong pace should be on here and he might come through a few beaten horses. A third at Newmarket in July and a fourth in Riyadh when last seen are two good runs which give him a squeak at long odds.
14:57 Doncaster – Docklands
Here’s the Listed Doncaster Mile over, yes you’ve guessed it, 1m. A Sussex Stakes winner against a Queen Anne winner! Rare for this race. I’m hopeful it’s the latter hero, DOCKLANDS, who comes out on top for Harry Eustace and Jamie Spencer. The six-year-old seems to have been around forever, but there is no reason why this set up is not ideal with two likely pacesetters and he can outclass the field.
15:13 Kempton – Survie
A Listed race for fillies’ and mares’ over 1m. SURVIE should be too good for this field under Billy Loughnane for George Boughey. She won on the all-weather at Lingfield in January and was a fair third in Riyadh when last seen. Basically on some of her French form she should be able to outclass this field.
15:32 Doncaster – Galeron (Each-Way)
The big betting race of the day in the Lincoln Handicap over 1m. Is this the day for GALERON? The former 2000 Guineas fourth to Chaldean has promised much time and time again in handicaps and fallen short. That includes this time last year when he was a staying on fifth in this very race.
He was rated 102 then, and comes in to this now off 95 with his very able rider Jack Callan taking off a tasty 5lb. So he can run off 90 – that’s the lowest mark he’s ever been in a handicap. There are sexier horses in this race and more frequent winners but this might just be the day. I have a few quid on each-way as he ended last season here with a fine second in testing conditions.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
