The 55th annual Juno Awards are taking place in Hamilton, and during the Juno Awards Gala on March 28, more than 40 Junos were handed out.

The night’s biggest winner was pop star Tate McRae, who was absent but won album of the year, artist of the year, single of the year and pop album of the year, the latter of which was accepted on her behalf by rapper Tobi. She beat Justin Bieber, who was also absent, but received no awards for his comeback album Swag II.

Both artists still have a chance to take home the TD Juno Fan Choice Award during the broadcast on March 29.

There were also multiple wins during the evening for Aysanabee, who took home both contemporary Indigenous artist of the year and alternative album of the year, and Daniel Caesar, who was absent, but won songwriter of the year. Caesar will also be receiving the International Achievement Award at the Juno Awards

A number of artists also took home their first Junos, with electronic artist Debby Friday excitedly winning her first Juno for dance recording of the year near the beginning of the night.

“I’m very grateful, I feel like the Junos is a Canadian royalty thing,” she told CBC Music in the media room.

First-time winner Karena Evans, who won for music video of the year for directing Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s music video for luther, said she had worked with both stars for quite some time. She also cited Director X as one of her inspirations.

“I started as an intern at his company in 2014, maybe, and he and Taj [Critchlow], my manager and his manager at the time, really took me under their wing and it was a pretty extraordinary process to learn from someone whose artistry I really studied,” Evans told the media room.

Begonia, a new Juno winner, tied with Bahamas for adult alternative album of the year, and the pair expressed their happiness with the tie because “everybody wins,” Bahamas said. They also hinted at collaborating in the future.

The full list of Juno winners is below, with the winners in bold.
