A flood risk warning has been issued to residents in two areas as spells of heavy rainfall are forecast
Ireland is braced for a wet and windy Sunday, with Met Eireann warning that torrential downpours later today could lead to serious flooding in two areas.
After largely dry and sunny start to the weekend on Saturday, the weather is set to take a dramatic turn today, with wet and windy conditions forecast for most of the country.
According to Met Eireann, there will be heavy downpours in the northwest and west this morning which will then spread southeastwards along with fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds.
The national forecaster has warned that the rain will be heavy at times in the west and northwest with a chance of some spot flooding in these areas.
There will be a clearance to sunny spells and isolated showers which will develop in the north and northwest in the morning, which will thankfully extend to most areas through the afternoon.

However, Met Eireann has warned that cloud and patchy drizzle will linger into the evening in the southwest.
he winds will veer westerly as the rain clears and just gradually moderate later, remaining rather windy throughout the day in northern parts, with highest temperatures of 10C to 13C or 14C.
There is some good news as Met Eireann has said that it’ll be dry in many areas tonight with clear spells, though there’ll be a few scattered showers in northern parts.
However, it is expected to become cloudier overnight from the west, with lowest temperatures of 4C to 9C.
Looking at the forecast for the week ahead, Met Eireann has said that there will be “a lot of dry weather to begin with” as a band of high pressure is set to dominate over the coming days, leading to relatively mild conditions.

The weather is set to improve at the start of the week, with bright and sunny conditons ont the way
However, the forecast warned that “it’ll become more changeable” from midweek and more unsettled later in the week and over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, with a mobile Atlantic regime taking over and low pressure likely to be dominant, with spells of wet and windy weather at times.
Met Eireann has also said that “we’ll see a downward trend in temperatures too after midweek”, with a weather expert warning that its ‘bad news for home heating oil users’.
Alan O’Reilly, the man behind social media hit Carlow Weather, told his 300,000 followers that wind and rain look set to lash Ireland next weekend, with a band of cooler air set to send temperatures plummeting.
“Still a lot of uncertainty around Easter weekend with a risk of wind and rain Saturday,” O’Reilly wrote.
“No sign of any real heat with cooler air more likely, bad news for all those home heating oil users with no real reduction in cost.”
