Mallow Search and Rescue on the River Lee

The search for a missing person in Cork city has ended in tragedy as a body was recovered from the River Lee this morning. Shortly before 11.30 am, the person was located deceased and recovered from the water by Mallow Search and Rescue teams in Cork.

The operation has been stood down. It’s understood that the body of a man, in his 30s, was located and recovered by Mallow Search and Rescue crews using advanced search technology, including a side scan sonar and remotely operated vehicle (ROV), this morning. It’s understood Gardaí are in the process of informing the family of the deceased.

Emergency services and search-and-recovery groups, including volunteers from Mallow SAR, Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery, and the Coast Guard, were on duty to assist with the search of the River Lee yesterday and this morning. Crews were out on the water for hours over the weekend after being contacted by the family of a missing person for assistance.

In a statement on social media, a spokesperson for Crosshaven Coast Guard said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this time. We have now stood down and returned to station. Remember, if you see someone in difficulty or think they may be in difficulty, immediately dial 112/999 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard
