Tributes have been paid to Barry Canny, owner of well-known Dublin restaurant Peploe’s, who died in recent weeks after an illness.
Canny established Peploe’s on St Stephen’s Green in 2003 and quickly turned it into a notable city centre dining address. He was known across the industry for playing the long game rather than chasing trends or quickly expanding.
Tributes from his peers speak to both his professional legacy and personal charm. Gina Murphy of nearby Hugo’s Restaurant described him on RIP.ie as “a wonderful restaurateur and a stalwart of the Dublin dining scene. Always a gentleman, and to a fault, impeccably dressed”.
Robert Doggett of Trocadero, also in Dublin 2, echoed that sentiment, calling Canny “a man of great vision”. He said he was “an important part of Dublin society”.

d of Dublin Tourism Frank Magee said Canny was “a wonderful, energetic, colourful and engaging character”, adding that he “made his mark on the Dublin restaurant scene and Peploe’s is a monument to him”.
Canny is survived by his wife Dee and daughters Gina, Emily, and Julie.
