Planning permission is being sought for a massive battery storage plant on the outskirts of Letterkenny.
The proposed electricity storage facility will consist of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development of 96 shipping containers on a 15.7 acre site, just off the main N13 Stranorlar road at Listillion.
The application, in the name of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Limited, will also include an upgrade of the dangerous Glenmaquinn/Convoy junction.
Included will be power conversion systems on concrete support structures, attenuation ponds, indicative 110kv buried import/export cable and indicative 110kv substation to facilitate connection to the existing 110kv Letterkenny Substation.
According to planning documents, the proposed facility will help support the flexible operation of Eirgrid and ‘decarbonisation of electricity supply by balancing electricity supply and demand.’
RES is the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, working across 24 countries and active in wind, solar, energy storage, biomass, hydro, green hydrogen, transmission and distribution.
“The North-West of the country is widely known to have insufficient electrical infrastructure to accommodate growing demand,” they stated in their application.
“Accordingly, the applicant examined the electricity network across counties Donegal and Derry to identify key nodes on the network, such as existing and proposed 110kV and 220kV transmission substations with the necessary electrical equipment to facilitate BESS connection. This technical review identified that the weakest capacity point of the electrical infrastructure grid within the region lay within Letterkenny and further, that an extension of the existing ESB networks 110kV substation compound, construction of a 110kV switchgear building and construction of 5 no 110kV line cable interface masts was approved at the Letterkenny substation, located on the opposite side of the N13 immediately northwest of the site.”
