David Muir opened World News Tonight on Wednesday, April 8, night with “breaking news” about the state of the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Now that 79-year-old President Donald Trump implemented a two-week ceasefire with Iran, extending deadline of 8 p.m. deadline on April 7 as the date where he’d obliterate the country if they didn’t open the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has doubled-down on keeping the waterway closed.
“Good evening we begin here tonight with the breaking news, the U.S. and Iran, and tonight the White House acknowledging this is a fragile ceasefire and it’s already being tested tonight,” the 52-year-old television host told viewers.

“Just hours after Trump announced the two-week ceasefire, Iran then saying it had closed the Strait of Hormuz. The White House had demanded Iran open the critical passageway,” David continued before he passed off the segment to ABC’s Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce.
Mary wrapped up her report with the latest on negotiation plans, explaining when they were scheduled to begin.

“David…negotiations are supposed to begin in earnest this weekend in Pakistan, but the two sides are not on the same page on a host of issues,” Mary shared. “And tonight Iran says the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, and that was President Trump’s top demand when he agreed to this ceasefire.”
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has revealed there was “work to do” to secure the U.S.-Iran ceasefire, but he still has yet to say if his relationship with Donald Trump is strained.
This came as there are rumblings that Iran could withdraw from the agreement if Israel continues its targeting of neighboring Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon.

Turmoil has ensued with the current Israel-Hezbollah conflict as Israel insisted that the fighting was outside of the ceasefire, despite peace broker Pakistan claiming that it was a part of the deal.
The Israeli army has targeted over 100 sites “within 10 minutes” across Beirut, the Beqaa Valley and southern Lebanon, in the “largest” onslaught since the Iran war began.
The latest strikes have seemingly affected what U.S. Vice President JD Vance has said to be a “fragile” deal. In response to the Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian-state media.
Also, there’s evidence that Trump’s ceasefire was met with chaos shortly after he announced it. Iran is considering “deterrent operations” against Israel, claiming that the country violated the ceasefire when it attacked Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
