According to Joey Fatone, you shouldn’t get too hyped for an *NSYNC reunion in the near future.

Quite honestly, he got right to the point, and I kind of respect that after all these years when I’ve gotten my own hopes up on seeing my version of the Fab Five on stage again. “Do I see anything in the near future? No I don’t,” Joey told ET.

Joey did confirm that there was a Zoom call with all of the guys, and every member was present — even Justin Timberlake. “All of us were there,” Joey said. “Talking, just talking to each other.”

But the result of that Zoom call is not what *NSYNC fans would have liked to hear. “Hey do we see anything? Or anything like that? It’s like … no,” he said. “Would I want to do it? Yes. Some of the other guys? I’m sure. Some of the other guys? Maybe not. I can only speak for myself.”

When asked whether Justin is the member who’s been holding out on getting the group back together, Joey didn’t deflect. “You’re not wrong in the sense of thinking that,” he told the ET correspondent. “But honestly, it is a group thing. Because I think all of us have that doubt as well.”

“I know it sounds crazy, but we also have even the doubt of, What happens if this sucks?” Joey continued. “What happens if it ain’t good?”

The moment that really rubbed him the wrong way was when *NSYNC was asked to introduce Justin’s first solo performance at the VMAs that same year.

“You are basically just pushing us aside a little bit to do this,” Joey said of *NSYNC’s management team at the time. “But yet, you still want us around to introduce him.”

“It is totally fine. But talk to us,” Joey continued. “Have a conversation. Say, ‘Hey, we’re promoting Justin. He has an album out. We’re not here for *NSYNC right now.’ If you would have had that conversation, it would have been a lot easier for me personally.”

About *NSYNC’s hiatus, Joey said there was never an official goodbye among the group members.

“That was the weird thing about it,” he said. “Nobody really had a conversation. There was never a button, there was never a goodbye. There was never anything.”

Joey is clear during Boy Band Confidential that he doesn’t harbor any ill feelings toward Justin and his solo success. He just wished there was more transparency within the band’s management.
“It must have been very difficult to leave,” he said. “Somebody should have said something.”

As an *NSYNC fan for more than half my life, I know that part of the unwavering hope that they’ll reunite is just because of what Joey said: There was never an official end. But even I don’t want a reunion if their hearts aren’t in it.
