University confirms meningitis case, says student ‘stable’ and ‘improving’

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has confirmed a meningitis case involving a 19-year-old veterinary student.

According to an official statement, the student developed a high fever and headache on April 4.

The following day, he was admitted to the emergency department of Trikala Hospital, presenting additional symptoms, including decreased consciousness and neck stiffness.

Tests confirmed the presence of meningococcus, and the case was reported to Greece’s public health authority, EODY.

The student remains intubated in the intensive care unit in “stable and gradually improving condition,” the university said.

Health officials noted that nearly 10 days had elapsed since the student’s last contact with campus facilities.

Tracing has been completed and close contacts have been prescribed a 10-day course of preventive antimicrobial treatment per EODY guidelines.

University officials described the timing as fortunate, as it coincided with the Easter holiday break, which reduced campus gatherings.

The university’s Health Committee is urging vaccination as essential protection against future risks.
