Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Thunderstorm warning for three counties.
The weather warning, valid from just after midday until 7pm on Saturday night, was issued for Cork, Kerry, and Waterford. Issuing the alert, Met Éireann forecasters warned that there would be “scattered thunderstorms with the chance of hail” for these counties.
Potential impacts from the adverse weather include localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions and lightning damage.
In an afternoon update, Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather warned that there were already thunderstorms hitting the southwest of the country, with winds reaching as strong as 86km/h along the west coast.
He wrote: “Thunderstorms in southwest now with heavy downpours and winds gusting to 86km/h on west coast.”
A separate Status Yellow – Wind and Rain warning for Cork and Kerry issued on Friday has also been in effect since midday today, and will remain in place until 8pm on Saturday night.
Met Éireann forecasters warned of very strong and gusty southwesterly winds, along with squally heavy showers or longer spells of rain and a chance of hail and thunder for these counties.
Potential impacts in these areas include difficult travelling conditions, spot flooding, some fallen trees and branches and some loose objects displaced.
