Horror fans will have the opportunity to see the “best zombie movie ever made” better than it’s ever looked before, as Train to Busan is heading back to the big screen with a 4K remastered version heading to theaters this summer. The director’s newest zombie movie, Colony, is also going to be released soon after.

It’s been officially announced by Well Go USA Entertainment that Train to Busan will return to theaters across the United States and Canada on Aug. 14, 2026. This will mark the first time the film will be presented in 4K on the big screen, and it’s coming just in time for the movie’s 10th anniversary. The company has also acquired the rights to Train to Busan filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho’s newest zombie feature, Colony, which will premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival in May before hitting theaters on Aug. 28, 2026. The trailer for Colony can be seen below.

Train to Busan and Colony Hit Theaters This Summer

“No one delivers zombie films quite like Yeon Sang-ho. Train to Busan redefined the genre for audiences around the world, and we’re excited to bring it back to theaters in 4K for its 10th anniversary,” reads a statement by Doris Pfardrescher, the President and CEO of Well Go USA. “With Colony, he takes that intensity and scale even further, delivering a bold and terrifying new vision for fans.”

Per the synopsis, Colony follows “Professor Se-jeong as she is thrust into a terrifying hellscape when a mutating virus is unleashed during a biotech conference, forcing authorities to seal the facility to contain the outbreak. Unable to escape, Se-jeong and a group of survivors must fight to stay alive as the infected undergo horrific transformations and threaten to spread the virus.”

Train to Busan was released in theaters back in 2016, and it was quickly established by both critics and horror fans as one of the very best zombie movies ever made. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an approval rating of a near-perfect 95%, one of the highest-ever scores for a zombie flick, tied with George A. Romero’s widely-celebrated classic Night of the Living Dead. It is consistently featured at or near the top of online lists ranking the best zombie movies in history.

Train to Busan is a very fast-paced zombie story set almost entirely on a speeding train. It follows a workaholic father, Seok-woo, who’s traveling by train from Seoul to Busan with his young daughter, Su-an. As the train is departing, a zombie virus breaks out, turning people into violent, contagious zombies. Survivors must fight their way through infected cars while the train speeds toward Busan, the only city that’s believed to be safe from the virus.

The movie spawned its own franchise due to how well it was received. An animated prequel, dubbed Seoul Station and also directed by Yeon, was released in 2016. Yeon later directed a standalone follow-up film for Train to Busan, titled Peninsula, which was released in 2020. The film was not a direct sequel, as it followed a new cast of characters, but it was set in the same universe. Horror icon James Wan is currently planning an American remake of the film as well, using the title Last Train to New York.

Train to Busan will hit theaters on Aug. 14, 2026. Colony will be released on Aug. 28, 2026.
