Emmerdale fans were all in agreement after Cain Dingle pulled out a “killer” twist to end John Sugden’s reign of terror.
John Sugden has quietly been terrorising the village for over a year now ever since he arrived last year. Although attempting to connect with Victoria Sugden, John ended up also falling in love with Aaron Dingle.
From that point the couple were caught up in a whirlwind romance and soon found themselves engaged. During their ceremony, Robert Sugden showed up to win back his ex-husband Aaron – a move that was unsuccessful.
John’s jealousy over the last few months grew viciously, especially after learning that Robert and Aaron had a one-night stand.
Throwing himself and Aaron off the edge of the gorge to ensure that Robert and Aaron couldn’t be together, viewers were in shock as they watched the drama unfold.
Both parties did survive, but John has been on the hunt after Aaron told everyone the truth that John had held Mackenzie Boyd hostage.
Mack then informed the police that John admitted to killing Nate Robinson, Cain Dingle’s son.
After learning of John’s crimes, Cain became determined to find John and make him pay. In recent episodes, John was spotted trying to blackmail Caleb Miligan to get him out of the country.
John used Anthony Fox’s body against Caleb, hoping that would be enough for him to cross the border.
During Tuesday’s (September 23) episode, Caleb drove John away from the village, seemingly going along with their plan. However, things soon shifted when John realised they were in the middle of the woods.
Holding a gun up to John, the villain seemed barely moved by the effort, until Cain appeared from nowhere and grabbed the gun.
With John terrified of what’s to happen, Cain goaded him: “You’re pathetic. Desperate for somebody to notice you. Because you have never been noticed, have you John?”

Calling him a nobody, John became irritated and told Cain that Nate hated him. While John was in the hole that Cain had dug for him, the villain decided to grab a rock in an attempt to hit them.
However, Cain was faster and said: “That’s the last mistake you’re gonna make” before the camera panned away and a gunshot was heard.
Viewers will have to wait to see what happened, but on X (formerly known as Twitter), they hoped that John had finally been dealt with.
@pinksweetheartx wrote: “Today’s episode was both gripping & emotional! I really enjoyed it & it finally feels like things are moving along. But that ending scene when the gun went off, what are we thinking? I’m not convinced Cain has shot J but I also don’t want him getting away”.
@polingirl suggested: “Do y’all think cain actually shot John?? I think he probably just fired near him to scare him. Now he’s going to try and force John to undo that “scheduled email” or something like that” as @kailbenny added: “Cain killing John would actually be one of the best shocks in soap history imo.”
Another viewer @soot7what penned: “The way John had a gun pointed at him and still managed to get under Cain’s skin… I really hope he did actually shoot him.”
Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
