‘They want to just lay her to rest in peace and with dignity, so this is their hope’

Scarlett, from the northside of Limerick city, passed away in Cork University Hospital on Monday after the decision was made on Sunday to take her off a life support machine.

The 29-year-old mum-of-one, from Longpavement, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family who had maintained a bedside vigil the following day.

Fr Pat Hogan said the Faulkner family are “deeply upset.”

“They want to just lay her to rest in peace and with dignity so this is their hope,” Fr Hogan told RTÉ Radio 1.

Fr Hogan, of Moyross parish, is chaplain to the Traveller community. He was with the Faulkner family on Monday night, and said the family shared memories of mum-of-one Scarlett.

“They want to remember her in peace, and they want to kind of maybe separate her from the violence that happened to her.”

Scarlett will repose at Cross’s Funeral Home, Lower Gerald Griffin Street, Limerick city on Thursday from 2pm to 4pm.

Her funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 11am in St Munchin’s Church, Clancy Strand. Scarlett will be laid to rest in Meelick Cemetery following the Mass.

Scarlett’s sister Victoria has paid an emotional tribute to the young Limerick mother, saying that she doesn’t know how she will live without her.

Taking to social media, Victoria Faulkner described Scarlett as her “best friend and big sister”.

“I’ll cherish our memories forever. My last hug and kiss off you. I promise you sister I’ll bring Oceanna (Scarlett’s daughter) to see you every day. I’ll do everything for her just like you’d want,” said Victoria.

“I love you with all my heart and soul. I can’t explain the way I feel right now knowing I’ll never see you walk in the door to me and sit down… I miss you every minute of the day, you will always be my best friend and big sister.

A message posted by Joanne Duffy, partner of Scarlett Faulkner’s brother, Thomas Faulkner, said: “What a warrior, RIP my beautiful sister in law.”

A friend said in reply: “RIP Beautiful Angel”.

Gardaí said their investigation into Scarlett Faulkner’s assault and subsequent death was “ongoing”.

“The Coroner has been notified. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course,” said a Garda spokesperson.

“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.”

“As two persons are currently charged before the courts, An Garda Síochána is not making any further comment.”

A 16-year-old girl is before the courts charged with assault causing serious harm to Ms Faulkner on March 21.

A 40-year-old woman is charged with endangerment, violent disorder as well as burglary, arising out of the garda investigation into the alleged assault on Ms Faulkner.

The girl and the woman cannot be identified by order of a District Court judge.

The two accused females have been remanded in custody to appear before Tipperary District Court sitting in Nenagh on April 23.
