Three Mayo projects have been granted funding through the 2026 Community Monuments Fund.

The fund, which helps owners and custodians of archaeological monuments to safeguard them into the future and improve access, was first established in 2020.

Works have been underway at Augustinian Abbey, Ardnaree Abbey, and Lough Lannagh Castle since they received funding last year, with Ardnaree and Lough Lannagh now receiving further funding of €121,526 and €100,000 respectively.

Additionally, €14,734 has also been allocated to Inishkea Cross Slab.

Welcoming the funding, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary, said; “This investment safeguards these monuments for the benefit of their respective communities. It does so by enabling conservation works and repairs as well as building resilience through protecting monuments from the effects of extreme weather and climate change.

“it is important,” he continued, ”that we cherish and look after such monuments of such local and national importance.”
