Following our previous look at an opening for a residential architect at Joseph Vance Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Senior Architect at ICON.

The position, based in Austin, Texas, calls for an individual who will contribute to the “development of entirely novel approaches to high-performance buildings.” Among the responsibilities will be contributing to the development of ICON’s 3D-printed wall system and developing drawings, diagrams, and construction documents of ICON products. The role calls for 8 or more years of experience in complex, multidisciplinary design projects.

The open role at ICON offers us the opportunity to look back on recent notable developments from the 3D printing innovators. In 2024, Archinect interviewed both Bjarke Ingels and ICON’s Melodie Yashar on the collaboration between BIG and ICON for a new catalog of 3D-printed homes. While Ingels outlined how the technology could offer new approaches to housing design and construction, Yashar discussed the applicability of such technologies to Yashar’s work beyond our planet.

That same year, at an SXSW event dubbed ‘Domus Ex Machina,’ the company presented a new low-carbon building material for 3D printing, named CarbonX, an AI-powered design system named Vitruvius, and a multi-level 3D printer named Phoenix. ICON also used SXSW to introduce CODEX, a digital catalog of ready-to-print residential homes containing more than 60 designs across five collections.

Following its March 2024 launch, the first CODEX homes came to the market in Texas in July. Eight homes were listed from the catalog, ranging from four to five bedrooms and 2,800 to 4,000 square feet, constructed using the new CarbonX material.

Elsewhere, BIG and ICON also broke ground on Liz Lambert’s 3D-printed El Cosmic resort. The design for the expanded El Cosmico resort, which may become the world’s first 3D-printed hotel development, includes multiple structures comprised of different organic forms to be printed on a plot totaling more than 60 acres. Completion is expected this year.
