A tiny rural school near Killybegs is staring at closure after just one child conditionally enrolled for next September.

Fintra National School currently has just four pupils and three teachers.

Despite efforts to boost numbers and secure the future of the school, the Board of Management says it is now facing the real possibility of closure at the end of the current academic year.

The battle to stay open included several measures such as an open day, offering a preschool, breakfast club and afterschool service, producing an enrolment video and carrying out a survey of prospective parents.

“Despite these efforts, we have had only one conditional enrolment for September 2026,” said a statement from the school board today.

In light of this, the Board of Management have extended the enrolment deadline to Wednesday the 22nd of April.

“After this date, the Board of Management regret that they will have no option but to liaise with the school patron, Bishop Niall Coll, regarding the closure of the school from the end of this academic year if the position remains unchanged.”

Parents or guardians who require enrolment forms for any class have been asked to contact the school on 0749731668 or by email at info@fintrans.ie before 3pm on Wednesday 22nd April.
