This campaign is all about getting to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, with Carla Ward’s side setting a third-place finish in the group as the target.

How did the win in Poland earlier this week help those plans along? David Gorman took a look at how Ireland are looking with three group games remaining.

Do we dare to dream of higher than a third-place finish? We just might..

“A 3-2 win in Poland? We’ll take that,” Karen Duggan writes in her latest column after Tuesday’s result.

“It’s funny, I felt hugely positive after Ireland’s opening group games against France and the Netherlands, even though we lost both of them. We played good football in those games and you could see this team is now playing to its strengths.

“My worry was that we usually perform well against higher-ranked opposition but often stutter against teams like Poland, who are in or around our level.”

Lets hope there are no such stutters this afternoon.

Afternoon all! Welcome along to The Irish Times live blog for the Republic of Ireland v Poland.

After their win on Tuesday in Gdansk, Carla Ward’s side are at home for today’s World Cup qualifier, with kick-off at the Aviva Stadium at 3pm.

We’ll be keeping you updated on all the live action, followed by a report and analysis.

We should have some team news shortly, but for now, here’s Gavin Cummiskey’s preview:

“For only the sixth time, the Republic of Ireland women’s team will play at the Aviva Stadium.

“Their record of two wins and three defeats really needs to improve in this World Cup qualifier against a Poland side out for revenge following the 3-2 loss in Gdansk last Tuesday.

“Also for the sixth time, Katie McCabe will lead her country out at the venue that inspired her to become a professional footballer several years before that career path truly existed.”
