Only Murders in the Building is set to return with its fifth season next week. While it’s too soon to tell if another season will be ordered by Hulu, co-creator John Hoffman doesn’t think an ending is in the cards just yet for the acclaimed murder mystery series.
As fans of Only Murders are all too familiar with, each season’s finale sets up the next murder investigation. While Hoffman isn’t ready to confirm whether that will be the case for Season 5 just yet, he did recently tell TV Insider that “if there were [another season finale murder], I think we will look to shake things up in a potential next go.” The co-creator confirmed that there have been no talks about ending the show, saying, “Nothing is at its end,” although he admitted that “there’s the stretch of credulity [of] how long can this thing go on?” Hoffman concluded that as long as the writers and producers keep coming up with worthy new ideas, Only Murders will likely keep coming back to Hulu for the foreseeable future.
Only Murders is one of the few streaming originals that has no problem cranking out a new season every year, with the upcoming fifth season having wrapped production back in June. As previously mentioned, the Season 4 finale introduced two new mysteries for the main trio — Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) — to solve in Season 5: the first, the murder of Lester the doorman; and the second, the disappearance of Brooklyn dry-cleaning king, Nicky “The Neck” Caccimelio. Hoffman hinted late last year that both mysteries may be connected, although at the time he refused to elaborate any further.

With Nicky Caccimelio tied to the mob, the fifth season of Only Murders promises to be the most dangerous yet, with Hoffman telling TV Insider that the production traveled to Staten Island to shoot inside the mansion that served as the Corleone Compound in the famous gangster film, The Godfather (1972). “[Lester’s death] opened up a world of New York that felt very right for the season because it was classical New York. It’s an unusual job, a doorman in an apartment building looking after everybody, and particularly this building where a few homicides have occurred,” the co-creator added.
Hoffman also revealed that Lester’s death will be ruled an accident, which doesn’t sit right with Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, “who’ve been studying murders in the most murderous building. They are driven by, [as] over and over again you’ll hear, ‘We’re doing this for Lester.’ They’re walking into very dangerous situations.”
Joining Martin, Short, and Gomez as part of the ensemble cast for the new season are Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Jermaine Fowler, Keegan-Michael Key, and Beanie Feldstein. Téa Leoni will also be back as Sofia Caccimelio, the wife of Nicky “The Neck” Caccimelio, as will Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard Morris, Streep as Loretta Durkin, and James Caverly as Theodore “Theo” Dimas Jr.
The first three episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 are set to premiere on Hulu on Sept. 9.
