(NewsNation) — In a speech given during his sweeping tour of Africa, Pope Leo delivered a message to young people in Cameroon: Don’t lose your humanity in the age of artificial intelligence and don’t abandon your country.

Speaking in French to students at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the Chicago-born pontiff warned that rapidly advancing AI technologies risk hollowing out real human relationships.

Docuseries shines light on dangers of AI

“Within digital environments — structured to persuade — interaction is optimized to the point of rendering a real encounter superfluous; the otherness of persons in the flesh is neutralized, and relationships are reduced to functional responses,” the 70-year-old pope said. “Dear friends, you, however, are real persons!”

AI, truth and ‘simulated reality’

As artificial intelligence reshapes global society, Pope Leo emphasized that technical skill alone is not enough.

What is needed, he said, is deeper human formation — education that helps young people understand not just how technology works but what it means.

“When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment,” he warned.

The consequences, he said, are already visible: echo chambers that isolate people; blurring the line between truth and fiction; and growing polarization, distrust, fear and violence.

“As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves,” he said. “We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another.”

Ultimately, the risk is far more dangerous.

“What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth,” Pope Leo said.

A call to lead with ethics and humanity

The pope urged universities across Africa to go beyond technical training and form leaders grounded in ethics, responsibility and service.

Students, he said, must become critical thinkers, capable of discernment; leaders guided by integrity; and citizens committed to the common good.

Pope Leo’s solution to the AI age is simple but demanding: shape “minds capable of discernment and hearts ready for love and service.”

Pope Leo warns against immigration: stay and build

In addition to his warning about AI, Pope Leo delivered a second message aimed directly at African youth: resist the urge to leave.

At a time when many young people across the continent seek opportunities abroad, he encouraged Cameroon students to invest their talents at home.

“I invite you, first and foremost, to respond with an ardent desire to serve your country and to apply the knowledge you are acquiring here to the benefit of your fellow citizens,” he told them.

A defining message from Africa

The address — delivered during an 11-day tour of Africa — underscores a central theme of Pope Leo’s papacy: that the defining challenges of the 21st century are not only technological or economic but deeply human.

In an era of artificial intelligence, immigration pressures and global uncertainty, Leo reminded young Africans to stay grounded, seek truth, serve others and remember that your humanity is your greatest strength.
