Patrick Muldoon, the US actor known for his roles in Days of Our Lives, Melrose Place and Starship Troopers, has died at the age of 57.

His manager confirmed his death to Variety, while People reported that he died on Sunday, 19 April.

Muldoon became a familiar face to television audiences in the 1990s when he took on the role of Austin Reed in Days of Our Lives.

The part made him one of the best-known younger stars on the long-running soap and helped establish him as a regular presence on US television.

He returned to the role years later, underlining how closely he remained associated with the character.

Muldoon went on to appear in Melrose Place, where he played Richard Hart, and also built a film career that included one of his best-known big-screen roles as Zander Barcalow in Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi satire Starship Troopers in 1997.

In the years that followed, he continued to work steadily in television films, dramas and independent productions.

Before his breakout, Muldoon had appeared in series including Who’s the Boss? and Saved by the Bell.

Muldoon was working on a new film project in Australia just days before his death.
