Troy Parrott claimed the first major silverware of his career last Sunday as AZ Alkmaar demolished NEC Nijmegen to claim the KNVB Cup.

Parrott started up front for AZ in the decider in Rotterdam, as the club sought their first major trophy since winning the same competition in 2013.

In the end, it was not much of a contest, as AZ demolished NEC (who currently sit 3rd in the Eredivisie) 5-1. Parrott finished off the rout with the fifth in injury-time, having already laid on an assist for Peer Koopmeiners earlier in the game.

With victory, Parrott claimed the first major honour of his career and, judging by footage from the homecoming in Alkmaar, he is certainly enjoying the celebrations.

Troy Parrott leads AZ Alkmaar celebrations

ESPN NL shared footage on Wednesday morning from AZ Alkmaar’s celebrations after claiming their fifth-ever KNVB Cup win.

Front and centre was Ireland’s own Troy Parrott, who led the crowd in a rendition of his own chant, set to ‘Freed from Desire’ by Gala:

We’ll say nothing about the quality of the Irishman’s vocals, and instead focus on the brilliant passion displayed by both him and the hoards of AZ fans gathered to celebrate, who sang Parrott’s chant right back at him with some vigour.

‘Freed from Desire’ is familiar to sports fans around the globe, something of an unofficial anthem of major sporting events, and will bring back fond memories of the most recent World Cup qualifying campaign, when it was blasted around the Aviva Stadium after a superb 2-0 win over Portugal.

Parrott’s two goals that day, and his heroics three days later in Budapest, have cemented his version of the chant as a favourite among Irish fans – its popularity in the Netherlands long predates those games.

It has been a regular on the terraces at AZ for almost two years now, dating back to his four-goal heroics against Heerenveen in September 2024.

The 24-year-old spoke to Irish Football Fan TV immediately after Sunday’s final and spoke of his emotion at finally claiming his first trophy as a senior player, having lost last year’s cup final.

It feels good, it feels good. The biggest thing is that we had to go through what we went through last year in this exact game. To come back and do it all again and win it in the way that we won makes it that bit sweeter.

Look, it’s hard as well, because maybe two months ago I was thinking to myself that the next…obviously with the Ireland games, and this game, and the quarter-finals of the Conference League, I was thinking the next two or three months could be the best or the worst two or three months that I’m going to have so far.

Obviously, what happened with Ireland happened, [I’m] still gutted about that, it’ll take a while to get over. But this is different, I’m here with my club. To see how much it means to everyone here is really special.

Hopefully the first of many for Troy Parrott, who has this week been linked with moves to some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
