COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -If you’re driving along East Fountain Boulevard in Colorado Springs, you might spot an unusual sight at the end of a driveway: two towering wolf figures that are hard to miss.
They’re one of the latest creations from local artist Sofia Hernandez Crade — and they’re not just sculptures. Hernandez Crade says the wolves are giant puppets, built with ropes on each side of the face so the head can move, and they can even wag their tails, all with human operators.
“I tried to make them as articulating as possible just so then they can convey many emotions,” she said.
Hernandez Crade created the wolves for their debut at the Manitou Springs Carnivale Parade in February. The event theme was “Love is Wild,” which inspired her to explore what love means.
“Wolves mate for life,” she said, adding that sometimes love also requires “allowing space for it to actually grow and to be wild.”
She also believes Colorado Springs’ art scene is gaining momentum.
“Even in the last five years, things have been getting really dialed up creatively,” Hernandez Crade said.
Hernandez Crade says she’s working on more large-scale pieces.
“With these kinds of colossal pieces… it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, wow, anything’s possible,’” she said.
