The global gauntlet is officially underway.

After kicking off Season 16 with Team Europe, MasterChef turned its focus to the Asia-Pacific region on Wednesday, as eight new home cooks stepped into the kitchen hoping to represent their heritage — and earn one of the next coveted white aprons.

The World Cup-inspired format continues to shape the competition early, with contestants once again battling for a limited number of spots and needing a unanimous yes from Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry to advance. With the Asia-Pacific banner on the line, the pressure is only intensifying.

From bold spices to deeply personal stories, the second round of auditions proved that the road to the MasterChef title — and its $250,000 prize — will demand both precision and heart.

Team Asia-Pacific Auditions

Representing a region known for bold spices, refined techniques, and dishes beloved around the world, the next group of home cooks stepped in to showcase flavors spanning 48 countries, from Afghanistan to Vietnam.

With just 45 minutes to work, each contestant was tasked with preparing a signature dish rooted in their heritage — one that told a personal story while meeting the judges’ demand for restaurant-quality execution. And with only five white aprons up for grabs, there was little room for error.

Lawrence, 69, Kearney, Mo. (Australia)

Lawrence said he first learned to cook in the early 1970s, but after decades in a traditional 9-to-5 job, he’s now looking to come full circle — ending his career where it began.

His Kansas City BBQ kangaroo with mango sauce, passion-fruit vinaigrette slaw, and yuca fries showed ambition, but the execution didn’t quite land.

Tiffany called the dish “rustic” but ultimately “rushed,” while Gordon said the kangaroo was slightly overcooked, even if the flavors were there. That was enough to end Lawrence’s run, as Gordon delivered a quick no.

Aishu, 33, Boston, Mass. (India)

Aishu described herself as a “rebel Indian,” unafraid to push against tradition — a mindset she carried into both her cooking and her personality, even giving Tiffany and Joe a quick dance lesson before getting started.

Her orange, cardamom and olive oil cake with vanilla mascarpone cream, blood orange coulis, and pistachio crumble leaned into bold flavor combinations.

Gordon praised the fragrance and said it “tastes better than it looks,” while Tiffany said it kept pulling her back for another bite — though it could have used more salt. Joe summed it up as a “homestyle dessert — delicious.”

It wasn’t perfect, but it was enough. Aishu earned a white apron.

Foo, 53, Irvine, Calif. (Vietnam)

Foo said the real master chef in his family is his mother, sharing that his name means “luck” in Vietnamese — something he carries with him into the kitchen.

His Vietnamese egg rolls filled with crab, shrimp, and pork, served with a dashi dipping sauce and herb cabbage salad, came with a deeply personal story. When his family immigrated to the United States, his mother couldn’t repay those who helped them — so she cooked, making egg rolls to share with friends. Now, as she battles dementia, Foo said he cooks to honor her.

Joe said the dish tasted nothing like a restaurant spring roll — “it tastes like history and culture” — calling it a 100% yes. Tiffany praised the egg rolls as “juicy” and “a really good bite,” adding that even the dipping sauce felt elevated. Gordon said they were seasoned “impeccably.”

Foo earned a white apron.

Shompa, Brooklyn, N.Y. (Bangladesh)

Shompa shared that she comes from a small fishing village off the coast of Bangladesh, where rich, seafood-driven dishes are a source of pride. Now based in Brooklyn, she was eager to showcase how her Bengali roots have evolved in her cooking.

Her halibut bhuna with fragrant rice and dal immediately impressed the judges.

Gordon called the dish “elegant” and praised the beautifully cooked fish, noting only that the dal needed a touch more seasoning. Tiffany described the halibut as “gorgeous” and the sauce as “fabulous,” while Joe was struck by how professionally the dish was executed.

It was an easy call — Shompa earned a white apron.

Tony, Minneapolis, Minn. (South Korea)

Tony, who was adopted, said the dish he prepared is one he’s eaten every year on his arrival day — now elevated as a way to connect with his heritage and share those flavors with other Korean adoptees.

His miso-marinated ribeye with kimchi fried rice had strong elements, but ultimately fell short.

Joe said the steak looked “poached” and needed more of a crust, even as he praised the rice as “delicious.” With the ribeye slightly overcooked and lacking a proper sear, it wasn’t enough to move forward.

Tony was sent home.

Iman, Md. (Afghanistan)

Iman described herself as a “buffet of a personality,” drawing inspiration from the large, shareable platters common in Afghan cuisine.

Her lamb qabuli palau with honey-glazed carrots and herb chutney showed promise, but the protein proved to be the downfall.

Joe pointed out that the lamb was overcooked and dry, and couldn’t overlook the mistake, quickly delivering a no.

Jaime, 27, Queens, N.Y. (Malaysia)

Jaime said her father has been a major influence on her cooking, describing his style as Malaysian street food made right at home. With more than 2 million followers across her platforms, she’s now chasing a dream of opening a food truck with him.

Her wagyu beef satay with peanut sauce and coconut rice delivered on both flavor and presentation.

Tiffany loved the char on the meat, calling it a “beautiful plate,” while Joe didn’t hesitate with a resounding yes. Gordon said the dish was authentic and delicious.

Jaime earned an easy white apron.

Fatima, 40, Bartlett, Ill. (Pakistan)

Fatima said she learned to cook from her mother after moving to the United States from Pakistan at 15, and now hopes to recreate that same joy in the kitchen with her own children.

Her lamb chops masala with hot honey glaze and braised onions had strong flavor, but key decisions held her back.

Gordon called the masala “delicious,” but questioned the addition of honey, saying it wasn’t needed. More importantly, the lamb was undercooked, and he noted he would have preferred goat instead. Joe agreed, calling it a poor ingredient choice.

It was a no for Fatima.

Daniel, 23, Johns Creek, Ga. (China)

Daniel said he’s long struggled with his identity as a Chinese American, but found connection through food, starting to cook at just eight years old. In college, he even launched a culinary club after realizing many of his classmates didn’t know how to cook.

His tofu and ricotta ravioli with mapo sauce and rice tuile took a creative swing — and it paid off.

Gordon said the dish looked lovely and praised its execution, calling it “bloody good.” Joe compared the sauce to a Chinese bolognese, even if he was initially surprised to see pasta representing China — though, as he noted, there are no rules.

Daniel earned the final white apron of the night.
