Kildare have booked their Dalata Hotel Group Leinster U20 football semi-final after a 1-20 to 2-12 win against Westmeath in Mullingar.

The quarter-final was rescheduled after heavy in and strong winds forced the abandonment of the original fixture at half-time in Kinnegad, with Kildare leading by three points.

It was the Lilies who started with a flourish at TEG Cusack Park, racing into a 1-10 to 0-00 lead after 15 minutes, with Ronan Kelly getting their goal.

Kealan Connell finally got Westmeath off the mark in the 17th minute and a goal by Cillian Rochford gave them further hope, but Kildare still had a comfortable lead at the break – 1-13 to 1-14.

The home side started the second period strongly, with Will Scahill kicking a couple of two-pointers. A goal on 45 minutes by Donnacha Maguire reduced the deficit to four points.

Kildare, however, regained the initiative when it mattered. Four unanswered points from Jimmy Lynch and two more from Kelly powered them on to a five-point victory.

Westmeath will now face Meath in the provincial decider on Wednesday next.
