In the lead-up to their Coachella debut, P-Pop band BINI was hit with nerves. It wasn’t stage fright. Stacey confesses it was a case of “What if no one will watch us?”
Instead, the eight-member group stepped out to a ripple of the Philippines flag among thousands of fans and festival revelers who had gathered to see them perform. Stacey, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Aiah, Mikha, Jhoanna and Sheena, better known as BINI, took Coachella by storm.
That first weekend, they made history as the first P-Pop band and the first South Asian act to perform at the desert-based festival.
Then they came back for more.
“It was so overwhelming,” Mikha admits. “Before we stepped on stage for weekend 2, our boss gave us a talk and said, ‘This is where you have so much more to prove, and expectations are higher.’” And prove it they did. Their weekend 2 performance matched that of Friday night headliner Sabrina Carpenter, who brought out Madonna.
Yes, BINI are safely riding a post-festival high, and they’re emotional about it.
As the group sits around a conference table at Penske Media’s HQ in West Los Angeles looking back at the monumental moment, Jhoanna says, “We shared original Filipino music with people, not just Filipinos.” She continues, “People went to Coachella for music, and being able to perform and show them what we can do is a really big for us. We’re stepping into this. We are making a path for other Filipino artists to be heard.”
The band has just released their third EP, “Signals.” The EP will be accompanied by a world tour starting later this summer.
BINI first hit the scene in 2021, forming through ABS-CBN’s “Star Hunt Academy.” Claimed by the Philippines as the “nation’s girl group,” the group has since had over 1 billion streams, and songs like “Shagidi” and “Pantropiko” have sparked viral dance trends on TikTok.
During that time, as a group, their sound has evolved. “Born to Win” was a cute but fierce bubble gum pop song. “We don’t want to be boxed into a certain genre,” Mihka says, as they began exploring and experimenting with genres including ballads and R&B.
Coachella marked a turning point and has opened up a world of possibilities for what they once deemed an “impossible” goal. Jhoanna says, “It’s not just about representing the Philippines. It’s about us as Filipino artists being part of these conversations. When people ask you, ‘Okay, who is your favorite group?’ We’re part of that. I think that’s our next goal, to be part of these conversations naturally.”
Aijah hopes the visibility will inspire others. “You see something that you can relate to you, and say, ‘Oh, that’s me. I want to be like that, or I want to be like her.’”
Next up, they’re already in the process of recording tracks for their next EP. Jhoanna declares, “Let’s strike while the iron is hot.”
