HOLLYWOOD had nothing on Ballyroe last night as film stars from a north Kerry village arrived for a glitzy award ceremony.
The culmination of six months of planning, the Ardfert Film Awards fundraiser in aid of the Ardfert GAA Field Development, was an enormous success with around €120,000 raised by the community.
With the help of Ken Rowe — an award-winning Independent filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer — members of the local community made seven films, all concise remakes of popular films and TV shows.
The short films of between 10 and 15 minutes duration were The Field, The General, The Snapper, Calendar Girls, Fr Ted, The Full Monty and Some Mother’s Son.

Featuring local casts and filmed around the Ardfert area, the films were shown to the audience on the big screen on Friday followed by an awards ceremony.
Radio Kerry’s Elaine Kinsella and Andrew Morrissey, along with Karl King — who has extensive experience in the film industry — were the judges on the night and they certainly had a tough time deciding on awards in the various categories.
It was also a fantastic occasion for the local community to get together and the 450 tickets for the event were sold out in just two hours.
