A woman has died after the car in which she was a passenger crashed into a wall at a busy Dublin shopping centre on Sunday morning.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was a passenger in the car, which was being driven by a man, also in his 80s, when the incident happened shortly before 11am.

The woman was prounounced dead at the scene, while the man is being treated in hospital for injuries that are believed not to be life threatening.

Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene of the incident on Idrone Avenue at Knocklyon Shopping Centre.

A large section of the car park was sealed off by gardaí for several hours after the incident as garda forensic investigators assessed the scene.

The car is to believed to have travelled a length of the one-way system in the car park to a point where traffic then turns to travel towards the exit.

But it crashed into a high red-brick wall at the end of the car park.

No other injuries were reported.

A parking spot close to the entrance of the SuperValu store was also sealed off by gardaí.

Local people said the emergency services had placed a screen around the car while they worked at the scene.

The car was later removed from the car park as the assessment of the area continued.

Gardaí appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Witnesses who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage and were in the area between 10.45am and 11.15am are asked to make it available, a spokesperson said.
