A Letterkenny man who launched a tirade of verbal abuse towards Gardai has been ordered to community service.

In lieu of a one-month prison sentence, Adrian Brogan was given 40 hours of community service when he appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

On February 5, 2026, Gardai were dispatched following a report of a disturbance on Main Street, Letterkenny. The manager of a premises informed officers that two males had been ejected.

Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Brogan, a 38-year-old of Dr McGinley Road, Letterkenny, became aggressive to Gardai.

Brogan delivered a verbal volley towards Gardai, telling them to ‘fuck off’ and ‘go fuck yourselves’. Brogan was also said to have called Gardai several derogatory names at the time.

Sergeant Collins said that Brogan, who has 15 previous convictions, was apologetic and contrite when he sobered up.

Mr Michael Shiel, solicitor for Brogan, said his client “became involved in an incident that he shouldn’t have”.

“He should have had sense and gone home, but he decided to become involved when there was no need to become involved,” Mr Shiel said.

Mr Shiel said Brogan is working “on and off” at the moment and previously worked as a labourer in Scotland.

Judge Emile Daly said she would ordinarily impose a fine, but said that Brogan “doesn’t seem to respect that and pay his fines”.

Mr Shiel confirmed that a Probation Officer deemed Brogan suitable for community service. He said Brogan’s last public order conviction was 12 years ago and asked the court to be as lenient as possible.

Judge Daly said a one-month prison sentence would be appropriate. In lieu of going behind bars, Brogan was ordered to 40 hours of community service.

Judge Daly warned: “If he is back before me, a default order of a prison sentence will activate.”
