Staunton Not Buying Moran Narrative After Mayo Loss To Roscommon

Roscommon have produced an emphatic victory over Mayo in their Connacht semi-final clash, emerging as winners on a 2.25 to 1-18 scoreline after a dominant second half display in Castlebar.

Mayo were the better side for much of the opening half while playing with a decent wind at their backs, looking as though they were about to open up a significant lead on a couple of occasions. However, the Rossies managed to stay within touching distance as they tailed by just three points at the interval.

The second half was a very different story. Roscommon were the dominant team, with Mayo completely failing to show up. Mark Dowd’s side would rack up a number of scores to open up a ten-point lead in the closing stages.

The home side could not close that gap, with Roscommon emerging as comfortable winners.

This was a fantastic win for Roscommon, who were fired towards the victory by a top class display from Diarmuid Murtagh. The forward would kick 1-10 in the game during a man-of-the-match display.

Jack Coyne was tasked with marking Murtagh in the game, a decision some feel would come back to bite Mayo.

Speaking on RTÉ, Cora Staunton said it was apparent that manager Andy Moran had got his defensive matchups wrong in this fixture.

I’d have to question why Jack Coyne was probably left on him too long. Donnacha McHugh came in and probably struggled on him as well.

You’d have to question Andy’s decision there. Jack Coyne hasn’t had the best league for Mayo, he is Mayo captain. Maybe that wasn’t the right matchup either…

He has been in poor form throughout the league. If you watch his league campaign, he’s probably lucky to be in the team. He was announced as Mayo captain at the start of the season.

Both matchups on Enda Smith and Diarmuid Murtagh, I’m not too sure about. I think it stifled Sam Callinan who was taking up Enda Smith, that forward momentum you get from Sam wasn’t there…

[Murtagh] was awesome today, but I still question those two decisions…

Andy Moran accepted in his post-match interview that Mayo were well short of the required standard in this game, saying Roscommon were by far the ‘hungrier’ team on the day. However, he suggested his side still had a lot to improve on as he was just one year into a three-year term.

That was not a narrative Staunton was all that keen on, suggesting such comments will be little comfort to Mayo supporters.

That’s fine if you’re a younger player in the team, Kobe [McDonald] will be gone next year. A Cian McHale or Darragh Beirne who we were very disappointed not to see today, that’s fine.

If you’re on the other end of the scale like Aidan O’Shea, Cillian O’Connor, Jordan Flynn, you’re just thinking of this year.

The Mayo fans are as well. Mayo fans will be very disappointed, that’s it, they really will be. They will probably give Andy a little bit of grace this year, but that performance just wasn’t good enough…

He said one of the positives today was Kobe. If you’re expecting an 18-year old fella who isn’t around next year to be your main man, it’s very, very disappointing.

This was a hugely worrying performance from Mayo, having come into the championship on the back of a decent league campaign.

It will certainly leave some lingering questions about the direction of travel under Andy Moran ahead of the All-Ireland series.
