A single mother struggling financially faced a devastating choice.
In Sunday’s (April 26) instalment of Rich House, Poor House, wealthy Mr Whippy owner Joe Sealey swapped his privileged lifestyle with Steph, her mother Gail and her daughters – 12-year-old Amelia and 7-year-old Darcey.
The Channel 5 hit show sees two households from opposite ends of the economic scale trade homes, weekly budgets and ways of life, fully experiencing one another’s circumstances. However, early in the episode, Gail had to withdraw from the exchange due to illness.
Based in Widnes, Liverpool, Steph occupies a three-bedroom property in deteriorating condition, with a damaged ground floor and mould spreading through Amelia’s room.
Working six days a week from home in telesales, Steph markets holidays she could never afford herself. Though she works tirelessly and excels in her role, she still struggles to cover essential costs. Once fundamental household expenses are paid, they’re left with just £98 per week for all other needs.

Discovering how the top 1% exists, they swap homes with millionaire entrepreneur Joe, who lives in a £3.5m property in Wilmslow, near Manchester, with wife Nicole and their two children.
Unable to participate in the swap, his family was replaced by family friend Tracey. The businessman trades his six-bedroom estate – complete with cinema room, gym and indoor pool – for seven days in Steph’s council house 30 miles away.
While Joe and Tracey had to stretch a weekly allowance of £98, Steph, her children and mum Gail experienced the other side of life with £2,000 at their disposal.
Shortly after the swap began, Steph had no choice but to send her mum home after she became too unwell to continue with the programme.
Gail, who resides near her daughter, has been struggling with poor health and remains a source of constant concern for Steph. This adds to the hardship endured by the family, who have already lost Steph’s granddad and sister to cancer.

Gail’s disappointment at departing is evident as she felt she was “letting her family down”. Speaking to the camera, Steph became visibly emotional as she recalled: “I will quote my daughter, ‘You (Gail) will be letting us down, nanny, if you stay, not if you go.”
The following day, Steph feels relieved after learning that her mum’s condition has improved considerably.
“She’s got a support network, so it takes the pressure off me because I know she’s got all that at home,” Steph revealed. “Now I think it’s going to help me relax and enjoy it more as an experience because I’ve not got that massive worry going on.”
Steph made the most of her remaining time, and when the swap concluded, her reunion with Joe and Tracey brought her to tears after a life-changing surprise.
Joe exceeded all expectations by redecorating her property, arranging a family holiday, and pledging to give her £20,000 from the initial sales proceeds following a successful business meeting.
Furthermore, he offered her a position on his sales team with a starting salary of £60k per year.
