Leo Varadkar
Leo Varadkar may have climbed down and apologised after pitting urban and rural Ireland against each other, but he certainly sparked a spirited debate.
Having initially stated that rural Ireland is subsidised by the urban economy, the former taoiseach later accepted he “went too far” and that he “overstated” his case.
However, did he have a point?
It’s a touchy subject that inspires a passionate conversation. Perhaps it all comes down to where you specifically hail from, but then again, how do we define what makes one individual “rural” and another one “urban”, anyway?
On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Ciaran Moran, deputy farming editor at the Irish Independent, and by John Burns, deputy group business editor with Mediahuis Ireland, to look at who is really footing the bill for Ireland, and to ask if Leo Varadkar exposed some uncomfortable truths.
