A popular protein bar sold in Ireland has been pulled from shelves after it emerged that it includes an undeclared ingredient that poses a potential health risk to some customers.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) announced on Wednesday that a recall notice has been issued for Healthy Fit Hazelnut Nougat Vegan Protein Bars as the producers failed to declare an ingredient on the product’s packaging which could make it unsafe for some consumers to eat.

The FSAI is warning that mustard is not listed among the product’s ingredients – meaning those who are allergic to or intolerant of mustard may unknowingly consume it. These consumers have been warned that they “should not eat” the implicated batch.

All batches of Healthy Fit Hazelnut Nougat Vegan Protein Bars and all best-before dates are included in the recall.

“Healthy Fit Hazelnut Nougat Vegan Protein Bars contains mustard which is not mentioned on the label,” an FSAI spokesperson said in a statement.

“This may make the batches unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of mustard and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated product. The affected product is subject to recall.”

Although a mustard allergy is rare overall, it’s still thought to be among the most common spice allergies.

People with mustard allergies who consume small amounts of mustard may not have severe symptoms. For this reason, some people aren’t aware they’re allergic to mustard.

Signs of a mustard allergy include:

Abdominal painDiarrhoeaDizzinessHives or skin rashNausea and vomitingSwollen lips, tongue or faceThroat inflammation and difficulty swallowingWheezing or shortness of breath

Someone with a severe mustard allergy is at risk for anaphylaxis. This immune system response is immediate and severe. Some people go into anaphylactic shock, which causes dangerously low blood pressure and severe throat swelling.

Anaphylaxis can be life-threatening and requires prompt medical attention. People with severe mustard allergies should always have an epinephrine auto-injector with them in case they accidentally eat foods with mustard.
