EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Anticipation is building in El Paso as BTS prepares to take the stage at Sun Bowl Stadium for two sold-out shows this weekend.
“It’s quite frankly one of the biggest events that we’ve ever had in the region,” said Jorge Vazquez, assistant vice president for UTEP Special Events. “Bigger than Coldplay was, not only in production elements, but just in magnitude.”
While the concerts are still days away, excitement is already on display across the Borderland.
Fans gathered Monday at El Paso County Commissioners Court, many wearing purple and BTS merchandise, to celebrate the group’s upcoming visit, their first to the region.
“It’s like a dream come true,” one fan said. “Out of any place they could have picked, they picked El Paso.”
County commissioners also passed a resolution recognizing a local BTS ARMY group for its impact on the community, including organizing events and bringing fans together ahead of the concerts.
The group also helped fund a special display at one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
Starting Tuesday, April 28, the Star on the Mountain will glow purple for seven nights, an effort made possible through a community-led fundraising campaign.
“We started a GoFundMe and quickly raised enough for one night,” one organizer said. “Then we kept going until it turned into the whole week.”
Officials say events like this not only bring excitement but also opportunity.
“It means a great opportunity to showcase what we are made of,” Vazquez said. “To showcase that this community will attract visitors from all over the world.”
When asked if more major concerts could come to El Paso in the future, Vazquez said, “Oh, you bet.”
The shows are scheduled for May 2nd and May 3rd.
