Man stole bottle of Campari from Laois shop

A man has been sentenced for stealing a bottle of Campari from a shop in Portlaoise.

James Dwane (46) of 22 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise, pleaded guilty to stealing the bottle from Buckley’s, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise and was intoxicated in public at Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise on September 19, 2025.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that his client had been deemed suitable for community service and a probation report had been compiled.

Judge Susan Fay said it was a positive probation report and she asked for evidence that the man was addressing his addiction issues.

Mr Fitzgerald said it is mentioned in the report. “It would indicate that he is clean for the last seven months”, he said.

Judge Fay sentenced the man to 50 hours of community service in lieu of three months in prison for the theft and made a nine month supervision order and said he should comply with the recommendations of the probation report.
