A driver was ‘flying’ along the road at a crazy 171km/h because he was ‘late for an appointment,’ he told Gardaí. Officers have warned there are “no shortcuts” after catching this N-plate driver going at more than 70km over the speed limit in Cork city.
Cork City Roads Policing Unit were conducting a high-visibility speed checkpoint when the driver came “flying past.” The VW Golf was detected travelling at 171km/h in a 100km/h zone.
When stopped, the driver said he had the foot down because he was running late for an appointment. Gardaí were able to find him a new appointment to worry about – a day in court. He was arrested on the roadside and will have to explain to the court why he was in such a rush.
Taking to the An Garda Síochána social media page for Cork, a spokesperson warned against speeding, and said there are “no shortcuts on the road,” no matter the reason. They shared: “Because arriving a few minutes late is a lot better than not arriving at all.”
Meanwhile, a driver was caught going over 140km/h by Gardaí on one of Ireland’s most dangerous roads. The ludicrous speed was detected by a driver on a 100km/h stretch of the N25 at Ballyadam, near Carrigtwohill, and is one of numerous notable and dangerous speeds detected as part of a Bank Holiday roads policing operation.
