The army bomb disposal team was called in after a suspicious device was found on the outskirts of Letterkenny on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed that the item has since been examined – and experts have established that the device was a flare.

A cordon was established and the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was summoned after the device was located in the area of Edenacarnan South.

The town land is between Letterkenny and Kilmacrennan and close to Illistrin.

Military vehicles, including the EOD, made their way to the area in mid-afternoon after being drafted in by An Garda Siochana.

The bomb disposal experts responded to the request for assistance at 3.41pm.

Gardai also attended the scene and manned the cordon. It is understood that a controlled explosion was carried out on the device.
