Mixed conditions are forecast on Sunday, but there’s better news for the week ahead
Ireland will endure mixed weather conditions on the Bank Holiday Sunday, with some areas set to bask in glorious sunshine while others will be hit by thundery downpours.
The country has enjoyed a recent spell of unseasonably warm weather which has seen the thermometer climb to 21C in recent days.
Unfortunately, the glorious run of sunny weather is set to come to an end this weekend, with spells of rain forecast across the country and temperatures set to struggle to hit double digits.
According to Irish weather expert Alan O’Reilly, who mans the popular @CarlowWeather account on X, there will be a “big contrast in weather” across the country today as he revealed the areas set to enjoy a sunny Bank Holiday Sunday, and the counties who are set to be lashed by thundery showers.
In a message to his 300,000 followers, O’Reilly said: “Big contrast in weather across the island with some nice sunny spots in West and Southwest but rain in Southeast and heavy scattered thundery showers further North with a few in Midlands.”

Looking at the week ahead, O’Reilly said that we can look forward to a largely dry few days, although he warned that there will be no sign of the recent blast of warm weather, with temperatures set to drop over the coming days.
“Some showers in Ireland over the next week but generally rainfall amounts low here,” he said.
“Other parts of Europe will see a lot more rain. Turning cooler here also though.”
Met Eireann have said that it will be cool for the time of year with a northerly airflow set to dominate conditions in the early parts of next week.
While temperatures will drop, the national forecaster said we can look forward to “a fair amount of dry weather” with some rain or drizzle at times.

Sunday (May 3): Mostly cloudy at first today with outbreaks of rain, drizzle and mist in places. Some limited brighter breaks and scattered showers will develop this afternoon, some heavy with a chance of isolated thunderstorms in west and south. Highest temperatures of 11C to 16C warmest in the west and south-west with light to moderate northerly breezes.
Tonight: The showers will gradually ease and become increasingly isolated overnight. Patches of mist and fog will develop. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 9C with light northerly breezes.
Monday (May 4): Monday will be drier day overall with some mist or fog at first and well-scattered light showers. There’ll be a fair amount of cloud but bright or sunny intervals will occur too. Highest temperatures of 11C to 15C with light northerly breezes.
Monday night will be mainly dry with a mix of cloud and clear spells along with some patches of mist or fog. A few showers are possible in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 8C, with light northwesterly breezes.
Tuesday (May 5): Tuesday morning will be mostly cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle moving southeastwards. Through the afternoon and evening, any patchy rain or drizzle will clear to the southeast. Bright or sunny spells will follow from the northwest. Highest temperatures of 10C to 13C , highest in the south, with light to moderate northerly breezes.
Tuesday night will be dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog. Lowest temperature of 1C to 6C with light variable breezes.
